False prosperity: Police are looking for con artists in Vienna!
In Vienna, fraudsters strike on the street! An unknown man is said to have defrauded at least two people of several thousand euros by pretending that he had recently been robbed himself. According to the Vienna police, the fraud cases occurred on December 15th and 16th, in the inner city and in Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus. The suspect stated that he was from Ireland or Great Britain and allegedly urgently needed cash for his return journey. To support his story, he produced fake documents, such as ORF Vienna reported.
In addition to the two cases mentioned, he is also accused of five other similar fraud crimes, in which he used false pretenses to persuade passers-by to hand over four-figure amounts of money to him. The man, who spoke in English during his deceptions, claimed he could transfer the money back through his banking app, but this never happened. To support the search, a photograph of the suspect has been released and the public is encouraged to provide any relevant information. This information was also provided by MyDistrict confirmed.
The fraudster's scam
The fraudster used a tried-and-tested scam: He spoke to passers-by, gained their trust through his made-up story and asked for money to supposedly help. The police emphasize that such incidents occur frequently and advise caution to avoid becoming a victim of such fraud. Anyone who knows anything about the suspect or has suspicions about similar cases should definitely get in touch.
