Denmark requires women to serve in the military

On Tuesday has Denmark his Conscription extended to women. With this decision, the Nordic country wants to recruit more soldiers and strengthen its defense in the face of rising security concerns in Europe.

New law on conscription for women

Under a law passed in June 2023, Denmark will require women who turn 18 after July 1, 2025 to register for potential enlistment on assessment days. This introduces a regulation that already applies to men.

Voluntary military service

Previously, women, who made up about 24% of all recruits last year, were able to join the military voluntarily. "In the current global political situation it is necessary to have more conscripts and I think that women should contribute to this as much as men," Katrine, a recruit in the Danish Royal Guard, told Reuters without giving her last name.

Adjustments in the armed forces

In Denmark, volunteers are initially drafted for compulsory military service, while the remaining places are allocated through a lottery system. The armed forces are currently working to better tailor barracks and equipment to the needs of women. "There are several things that need to be improved, especially in terms of equipment. At the moment a lot of things are designed for men, so for example the backpacks are perhaps too big and the uniforms are also too loose," said Katrine.

Future plans for conscription

Denmark, together with its NATO allies, plans to increase defense spending. The country also plans to gradually increase the duration of compulsory military service from the current four months to 11 months in 2026 and to increase the number of recruits doing military service from around 5,000 currently to 7,500 in 2033.
