Europol has released alarming news: in a large-scale operation, over 270 suspects have been arrested worldwide who are involved in the abuse of children via artificial intelligence. In Operation Cumberland, which took place on February 28, 2025, Danish law enforcement and police units from 19 other countries cooperated. A central role is played by a Danish man who was arrested in November 2024 and who distributed AI-generated material via an online platform. Users were able to access this content through a token payment, which posed enormous challenges for investigators. Of particular concern is the fact that the images used are entirely synthetic and therefore do not depict real victims. Nevertheless, their existence manifests the perception and objectification of children, warned Catherine De Bolle, the director of Europol, pointing to the need to develop new investigative approaches.

The role of AI in child abuse

The phenomenon of AI in the context of child abuse shows a worrying trend. Loud NZZ Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to create and manipulate pornographic images of minors. The EU is already working on measures to curb these developments, as the lack of specific laws against AI-generated child abuse is a key problem. Investigators must look for appropriate tools to distinguish AI manipulations from real material, while focusing on preventing perpetrator behavior. The threat of AI in the area of ​​child sexual abuse appears to be far from over, necessitating increased efforts to protect children and stop perpetrators.
