Frigate Hamburg: Homecoming after six months in the Mediterranean!
The frigate “Hamburg” returns to its home port of Wilhelmshaven today after almost six months of deployment in the Eastern Mediterranean. The ship, equipped with around 220 soldiers, would have carried out numerous tasks in protecting the American landing ship USS “Wasp” during its mission, as the Navy's press and information center reports. It was originally planned for the “Hamburg” to also operate in the Red Sea, but the operational situation in the Mediterranean prevented this. Over the entire period, the frigate covered an impressive 31,000 nautical miles. Also on board was a helicopter component from Naval Aviation Squadron 5 as well as the sea battalion from Eckernförde, while numerous relatives were waiting for the soldiers at the port when they returned NDR reported.
Return of the submarine U35
The submarine U35, with 30 men and one woman crew under the command of frigate captain Nils Kirschall, will also return to its home base in Eckernförde on January 13, 2023. For almost four months, the submarine was engaged in the Mediterranean as part of the EU mission EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, where it enforced the United Nations arms embargo against Libya. The highlight of the mission was the visit of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on board to Valetta, Malta. During the return journey, the crew spent the New Year in Portugal. This mission contributes to supporting the peace process in Libya and renewed European efforts in the fight against illegal arms transfers, such as German Naval Association reported. This measure signals the determination of the EU and its members to promote peace and stability in the region.
