Vienna is preparing for gas-independence: a new energy market!
At the turn of the year, Gazprom has completely stopped using its natural gas deliveries to Austria, which causes a stir in the industry. At the same time, as announced, Ukraine stopped the gastransite through its country. These developments were not surprising because the Vienna Stadtwerke and Vienna Energie had already prepared for this situation in advance. Economic city councilor Peter Hanke emphasized that security of supply for Austria is a top priority. "We took the right steps in good time so that Vienna Energy can get out of Russian gas completely this year," said Hanke and added that these measures also represent an example for other countries.
alternative gas sources secure supply
The General Director of Vienna Energie, Peter Weinelt, announced that the gas bearings were well filled and that the dependence on Russian natural gas was successfully reduced. Alternative sources of supply were developed in 2022, so that the majority of the gas will come from the North Sea for 2025. "Our memory are well filled, and we have consistently loosened on the dependency on Russian natural gas," said Weinelt. This planning promises that the entire gas requirement of the Viennese citizens and the power plants can be covered by reliable European dealers, and at the same time the customers are protected from additional costs by tariffs with price guarantee.
Another future -oriented step of Vienna Energy is the massive expansion of renewable energies and the conversion of heat supply to sustainable sources. This includes the large -scale heat pump, which provides environmentally friendly district heating for 25,000 households. This can be seen as a decisive measure to achieve the climate goals and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels in the long term. "This change is a common effort," says Wein, "and we need solutions such as faster approval procedures and clear legal framework conditions in order to make Vienna future -proof, livable and affordable," he continued.
