Austria in the ice hockey quarter-finals: fight against Switzerland on Tyrolean ice!
Austria's national ice hockey team has done it: On May 22, 2025, the team will play against Switzerland in the quarterfinals of the Ice Hockey World Championship. The match will take place at the Jyske Bank Boxen Arena in Herning, Denmark and marks a significant milestone for the Austrian team as this is the first time they have advanced to a World Cup quarter-final since 1994. Austria secured their place in the quarter-finals with an impressive 6-1 win against Latvia.
The Jyske Bank Boxen Arena was converted into an ice hockey arena in just ten days. Particular attention is paid to the ice, which was provided by the Tyrolean company AST Eis- und Solartechnik GmbH. Actually, a total of 30 games were supposed to be played on this “Tyrolean” ice, with a four-person team from AST being responsible for maintaining the quality of the ice. Managing director Michael Peter emphasizes the need for experience, precision and passion to ensure the maintenance of the ice.
Home advantage for the ÖEHV team
The ice in Herning has a special meaning for the local team due to the presence of Austrian technicians. Since the game is played on Austrian ice, the team of coach Roger Bader, who has Swiss roots, could benefit from a certain home advantage. Although the team leader's country is playing against its own nationality on this crucial match day, the positive atmosphere in the hall should not be underestimated.
The IIHF has also responded to criticism of the ice conditions in Herning. Some nations, including the DEB, expressed concerns that the ground was considered too soft. To counteract this, the World Ice Hockey Federation has decided to extend the period breaks from 15 to 17 minutes. This is intended to help the ice cream freeze better after processing and therefore become harder. This regulation also affects the ÖEHV team, even if it does not play in Herning in the group phase.
The quarter-final match against Switzerland takes place on Thursday at 4:20 p.m. and the Austrian team has the opportunity to make history by reaching the semi-finals again in three decades. With optimal conditions and fanatical support, they could take another step into the ice hockey history book.
The omens are good: Austria has put together a talented team and the energy within the team is high. Spectators can look forward to an exciting duel in Herning, where both players and fans will enjoy a special ice hockey event.
