Two devastating fires in Carinthia: Investigating police on the trail of the arsonists!

On October 19, 2025, there was a devastating fire in Carinthia that broke out in a farm building. The incident occurred on Sunday night and tragically claimed the lives of 15 sheep and 10 chickens who could not be saved. Fortunately, there were no injuries to either animals or people. Around 150 emergency services from the surrounding fire departments worked intensively to bring the fire under control and to keep the damage to neighboring buildings as low as possible. The fire brigade secured several gas bottles and an 800 liter diesel tank to prevent another accident.

The investigation was immediately started by the Carinthia State Criminal Police Office, which is investigating in all directions. In particular, it is being examined whether there is a connection to a fire that occurred the previous Thursday in the same region. In this previous incident, the upper part of a stable building completely burned down. Here, too, around 170 firefighters were deployed to prevent anything worse from happening. The total damage from both fires cannot yet be quantified.

Investigations and causes of fire

The possibility that arson was behind the incidents cannot be ruled out. Arson is an often underestimated risk, particularly in rural and remote areas. According to statements by Haufe Arson is often caused either by unauthorized persons, in connection with vandalism, or by company employees. In other cases, damage may occur intentionally, possibly in order to cover up one's own mistakes.

The number of unreported cases of arson is higher, especially in smaller incidents such as garbage fires. This leads to a high number of attacks that can seriously jeopardize the causes of fires. Preventative measures, such as expanding theft and burglary protection, are crucial to minimizing the risk of arson.

Statistical insights into fire events

The need for comprehensive statistics on the subject of fire protection is undisputed. A current overview of FeuerTrutz shows that although there are numerous statistics on fires and their causes in Germany, there are no uniform and comprehensive fire statistics. More precise data could help to optimize preventive measures and thus improve fire protection measures.

In Austria, where the current fires took place, similar investigations into the cause may be necessary in order to prevent such incidents in the future. The handling of combustible materials and ensuring fire protection measures are of central importance.

Current developments in Carinthia shed light on the importance of fire protection and the need to actively manage fire risks. The investigation will continue to be closely monitored in order to gain clarity about the background to the fires.
