Wasp nests in Menden: Don't just fight them - that's what you need to know!

Menden. A seemingly harmless incident has now had serious consequences! A senior citizen discovered a wasp nest in her seat cushion and, without thinking twice, reached for insect spray. But what she didn't know: Wasps are normally protected by the law! Your rash reaction could now have far-reaching consequences, and the Märkischer Kreis has already responded to this incident.

The excitement is great! When asked, Ulrich Hering, head of the Noah's Arch nature conservation center, confirmed the legal aspects: hornets, bees and bumblebees are among the "specially protected species", and wasps are also subject to the general protection of wild species. Nests of these insects may only be removed with permission. “Simple disposal or poison spray are an absolute no-go!” Hering warned urgently. Not only could this have legal consequences for the senior citizen, but it also opens up a discussion about how to properly deal with these important pollinators.

Legal facts and contact options

Ulla Erkens, press officer for the Märkisches Kreis, provides further important information: “The risk of a wasp sting is generally low for non-allergy sufferers, because the venom of wasps is weaker than that of bees!” A stinger often only becomes a problem when people carelessly come near the nests. It is important to maintain a distance and not disturb the flight path. If you still come across a wasp nest and feel unsafe, you can contact the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.

A helpful tip from the experts: A photo of the nest and its exact location can help assess the situation quickly and competently. The experts then analyze what species of animal it is and how big the risk is. “Whenever possible, we relocate nests to safe locations – because every squirrel counts in the fight against the decline of insects!”
