Christmas Miracle: Callahan, the rescued horse, finds a home!

On December 22, 2025, Esternberg Sanctuary became the site of a miraculous event when Callahan, a warmblood gelding, was taken in there just before Christmas. The gelding, which previously served as a riding school horse, was rescued from disposal. His story touches many people because it came into the possession of a new owner, but she separated from him after a few months. Luckily he found a place at the sanctuary where he was given a second chance. Callahan's rescue was made possible by the support of many animal-loving people who are committed to the welfare of animals.

Callahan received a warm welcome when he arrived at the sanctuary and now lives with other horses and donkeys, including his new friend, the chestnut gelding Missoui. His friendly, curious nature and lack of dominance behavior make him a valued roommate. The following day, Callahan was allowed to go out to pasture with the other animals, where he can enjoy the freedom of movement and social contacts. The sanctuary offers him a horse-friendly life that is characterized by self-determination and a loving environment. The supporters who made this rescue possible are thrilled to be part of this Christmas miracle.

The situation in animal protection

Callahan's rescue reflects the challenges currently facing animal welfare organizations. Old and sick animals in particular often find no place in animal shelters because they are overcrowded and cannot offer a new home to everyone in need. Therefore, the concept of foster homes was developed to give these animals a chance for love and a family environment. According to the Tierhilfsdienst, the animals are housed in foster homes permanently, not just temporarily, which offers them a stable environment.

There are currently 37 dogs, 16 cats and 11 horses in foster homes at the Ahlum animal shelter. Volunteer walkers also do valuable work by offering the animals individual attention and social contact. The “Foster Homes” section within the organization shows the animals that are still looking for a family, while the “Foster Farm” section shows the animals that have already been rehomed or are difficult to rehome.

Animal protection organizations in Germany

The situation surrounding animals like Callahan is supported by many animal protection organizations in Germany that are committed to the protection and well-being of animals. Particularly noteworthy is the German Animal Welfare Association, the largest animal and nature conservation umbrella organization in Europe, which has numerous local animal protection associations and animal shelters. These organizations not only work through advocacy and practical assistance, but also provide education and a pet registry.

In addition, other organizations such as “FOUR PAWS” are committed to improving the living conditions of animals, especially stray dogs and cats. The diversity of animal protection organizations, their tasks and specializations show how important and necessary animal protection is in Germany. They all contribute to the rescue and welfare of animals like Callahan, who are often in dire straits.

Overall, the stories and initiatives in animal protection make it clear that community engagement and support are essential for a better future for our animal friends. Callahan's rescue is a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration and compassion.
