On September 12, 2025, a tragic traffic accident occurred on federal road 8, near Sandbach, city of Vilshofen an der Donau at around 5:20 p.m. A 76-year-old man from the Passau district got on the opposite lane for an unknown cause and collided frontally with a small van in which there were three adults. The collision had fatal consequences for the driver who suffered fatal injuries.
The driver of the small van was caught in the accident and had to be freed by the fire brigade. All three inmates of the small van, two men and one woman, contracted serious injuries and were immediately admitted to nearby hospitals.
Rescue and emergency services on site
Bundesstraße 8 was completely closed for about four hours, which caused significant traffic disorders. A local diversion was set up in cooperation with the fire brigade. Around 60 firefighters from the towns of Sandbach, Vilshofen an der Donau, Windorf, Schalding on the right of the Danube and Neustift were in action to take action after the accident. In addition, two rescue helicopters were used, the landings of which affect train traffic on the adjacent railway line at short notice. There were also two representatives of emergency pastoral care on site who supported the emergency services.
The Vilshofen police inspection on the Danube took over the accident recording, with the Passau traffic police with support. An independent accident expert was consulted to clarify the circumstances of the accident. The vehicles involved were ensured and the investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
