Fatal accident on B8: 76-year-old dies, three injured in hospital!

On September 12, 2025, at around 5:20 p.m., a tragic traffic accident occurred on federal highway 8, near Sandbach, town of Vilshofen an der Donau. A 76-year-old man from the Passau district crossed into the oncoming lane for unknown reasons and collided head-on with a van containing three adults. The collision had fatal consequences for the driver, who suffered fatal injuries.

The driver of the van was trapped in the accident and had to be freed by the fire department. All three occupants of the van, two men and a woman, sustained serious injuries and were immediately taken to nearby hospitals.

Rescue and emergency services on site

Federal Highway 8 was completely closed for around four hours, causing significant traffic disruptions. A local diversion was set up in collaboration with the fire department. Around 60 firefighters from the towns of Sandbach, Vilshofen an der Donau, Windorf, Schalding on the right of the Danube and Neustift were deployed to respond to the accident. In addition, two rescue helicopters were deployed, whose landings briefly affected train traffic on the adjacent railway line. Two representatives from the emergency pastoral care department were also on site to support the emergency services.

The Vilshofen an der Donau police station took over the accident investigation, with the Passau traffic police also providing support. An independent accident expert was called in to clarify the circumstances of the accident. The vehicles involved have been seized and investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
