accident statistics and security on open -air roads
The tragic incident is part of a worrying trend in Austria. According to [vcö] (https://vcoe.at/presse/presseaus-sendungen/decoe80-prozent-der-toberliche-motorradunfaelle- on-Freihandstrasse), the majority of fatal motorcycle accidents on open-air roads. In 2024 there were a total of 349 traffic fatalities in Austria, including 82 motorcyclists. Surprisingly, the number of deadly crashed motorcyclists has remained constant in recent years, despite a decline in the total number of traffic fatalities by 13 percent. It is particularly alarming that 80 percent of fatal motorcycle accidents on open -air roads took place, while only 16 percent took place in the local area. Almost three quarters of these accidents (72 percent) were caused by motorcyclists themselves, often due to non -adapted speed (53.5 percent) or carelessness and distraction (17.4 percent). These statistics illustrate the need for measures to increase motorcycle traffic.
demand for more security
The VCÖ urgently demands measures to increase safety when driving motorcycles, especially on open -air roads. In the age group of 50 to 64-year-olds, motorcyclists are most affected and make up 35 percent of the fatalities. This indicates an increased need to better protect young and less experienced drivers through targeted security audits and campaigns.
The tragic accident in the Metnitztal is a painful example of the dangers that motorcyclists are exposed to on the streets of Austria. There is hope that such incidents will be taken from such incidents to improve security on the streets in the future.
