Sebastian Krumbiegel: Music with attitude – AfD is not allowed to use Germany song!
Osnabrück - In a powerful interview with the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, the singer of the band “Die Prinzen”, Sebastian Krumbiegel (58), made clear his artistic development and his clear stance on the political appropriation of music. He talks about his early passion for Freddie Mercury and Queen and how he was inspired by the choir's performances in the GDR. Back then he was able to discover the treasures of rock music while traveling in the West. “The first Queen record was ‘A Night at the Opera’ – that music electrified me!” remembers Krumbiegel, emphasizing how important it is to have artists as role models when finding your own identity.
Krumbiegel encourages the young generation to try out music: "Imitation is a great way of self-discovery! If something is really cool, you can develop your own voice through it." The singer lists influences from Bach to Eminem and explains that being open to different styles of music is important even as you get older. “I work with artists like BIBIZA and Danger Dan to avoid becoming a bitter old fart,” he says with a wink.
Political appropriation: a no-go!
A particularly explosive topic for Krumbiegel is the political use of music. “You have to defend yourself against attacks and threats!” he warns. The AfD made the mistake of wanting to use the Princes' song “Deutschland” at a party conference. "We reacted immediately and called in our lawyer. That's not possible!", says the musician, describing the situation. Finally, the AfD received a written document in which it committed itself to no longer using the hit. Krumbiegel makes it clear: Political appropriation of music is not tolerable! Scientists call this a clear sign against right-wing extremist practices in the music scene.
