Scholz under pressure: Who will be the new SPD chancellor candidate?

A political earthquake in Germany! Chancellor Olaf Scholz is faced with a decisive question of trust that is to be asked in the Bundestag on December 16. If the parliament expresses distrust of him, the electorate will flock to the polling station on February 23. But the question that all concerns: Will Scholz actually compete as a candidate for chancellor of the SPD or could he be overtaken by another surprising candidate?

The unrest in the ranks of the SPD is noticeable! Scholz, who was considered a safe candidate for Chancellor a few months ago, suddenly sees himself on the suddenly growing skepticism. "Yes, grumble is there. Of course there are also voices," confirmed SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich on ZDF. The Federal Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius, who was in the past against the traffic light government, enjoys increasing popularity among the comrades. According to a current Forsa survey, Pistorius is well ahead of Friedrich Merz (25 percent) and Scholz, which only receives 16 percent of the votes.

The support for Scholz crumbles

The support for Scholz is not completely lost. SPD-Co chairman Lars Klingbeil and general secretary Matthias Miersch demonstratively stand behind the Chancellor and emphasize that the argument between Scholz and Merz will be decisive. Nevertheless, a survey by the institute "Yougov" shows that 44 percent of those surveyed believe that Merz has the best chance of leading the next federal government, while only 6 percent see Scholz as favorites. An alarming signal for the SPD!

The voters seem undecided: 29 percent do not yet want to commit to how the choice could end. AfD chairman Alice Weidel is seen by 13 percent as a possible chancellor. The tension increases and time is pushing! The Bundestag election 2025 could be one of the most decisive elections in recent years.
