The first TV duel between Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and his challenger Friedrich Merz (CDU) has left the audience back in mixed feelings. According to a flash survey by the research group elections for ZDF and the Tagesspiegel gave the respondent to the Chancellor, during 34 percent Merz considered more. About 29 percent saw both candidates on a similar level.
The survey is not representative of all voters in Germany for the entirety of all voters, but only for the audience of the duel. The opinion varied greatly depending on the age group: for the 18- to 34-year-old average Scholz with 47 percent significantly better than Merz, which only received 25 percent. In the 35- to 59-year-olds, both opponents had a close competition, while Merz was minimally ahead with the over 60s with 36 percent. Despite an exciting duel, there was little movement in the viewers' attitudes to the two politicians, since over half of it stated that their opinion on Scholz (57 percent) or Merz (62 percent) had not changed.
