On December 8, 2025, the Oberhausen fire department's emergency services were alerted after numerous emergency calls reported a fire in a shop on Bahnhofstrasse in Oberhausen Sterkrade. As fireworld.at reports, the situation was initially unclear as there were concerns about possible people in the building. However, the alerted command service was able to quickly give the all-clear.
A closer investigation revealed that the smoke was not caused by a fire, but rather by the collapse of a ceiling structure made of plasterboard over an area of around 100 square meters. The dust from the collapse was mistaken for fire smoke. Fortunately, the operator of the restaurant was able to confirm that everyone had left the store on time.
Emergency services in detail
The Oberhausen fire department responded with a large-scale operation. The fire engines from fire and rescue stations 1 and 2 were alerted, as were several ambulances. In total, around 30 emergency services were on site who forced their way into the building to ensure that no one was left behind. The adjacent areas of the residential and commercial building were also checked.
The operation lasted around 45 minutes, and although the rooms cannot be used until further notice, the building structure remained undamaged. As the City of Oberhausen informs, the fire brigade is on duty around the clock and 365 days a year to ensure safety and rapid protection. With around 275 full-time and around 400 volunteer members of the volunteer fire department, it provides comprehensive help in the event of fires, accidents and medical emergencies.
