Olof Palme Peace Prize: Submit proposals for peace now!
Reinbek. The Olof Palme Peace Prize, an award for outstanding commitment to peace and social balance, will be awarded for the 36th time on Friday, February 28, 2025 at Reinbek Castle. With prize money of 200 euros, this honor is given to people or organizations who are particularly committed to peaceful coexistence.
The SPD Stormarn, in collaboration with the Walter Jacobsen Society, is calling for suggestions to be submitted for nomination. Anyone from the Stormarn, Duchy of Lauenburg, Segeberg and Ostholstein districts can make suggestions. The aim is to honor people or associations who demonstrate an exemplary commitment to peace and balance.
Commitment to peaceful coexistence
The prize was first awarded in 1987 and commemorates former Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, who was assassinated in 1986. It stands for the commitment to international understanding, world peace and equality. This year there is an exciting innovation: In addition to Stormarn, people and clubs from neighboring districts can now also be nominated.
“You have to stand up for democracy, togetherness and freedom,” emphasize the SPD district chairmen Marion Meyer and René Wendland. “The commitment of many local people is particularly important, especially in regions where these values are threatened.” The Peace Prize is intended to honor this commitment and keep alive the memory of Olof Palme, who stood up for peace and democracy.
Jury of seven members
A seven-person jury chaired by Birgit Kassovic will select the prize winners from the suggestions received. In recent years, over 250 groups and people have been nominated. Suggestions can be sent to the SPD district office in Bad Oldesloe by Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Further information can be found on the SPD Stormarn website.
