Sport as a key to integration: Successful study in SH!
A groundbreaking project by the Schleswig-Holstein State Sports Association (LSV) shows how sport can contribute to the integration of refugees! The “Sport for All – Sport with Refugees” program has been running since 2015, and a new evaluation study by Jonathan Syring, a doctoral student at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel, sheds light on the decisive factors for success. The impact mechanisms and success factors of the project were examined in detail in ten interviews with integration pilots. The aim of the study is to gain valuable insights for the further development of the program.
Integration pilots: The heroes of integration
The integration pilots play a key role in this project! They build bridges between refugees and sports clubs, help with access to sports opportunities and overcome language and cultural barriers. “The work of the integration pilots is an essential key to the success of this project,” emphasizes Syring. Their close cooperation with the sports clubs not only promotes integration into sport, but also social integration into society. The positive dynamic created by sport makes it possible to make new friends and develop a sense of belonging.
Challenges and outlook
Despite the success of the project, the integration pilots face major challenges! The evaluation study highlights that long-term financial security is urgently needed. Their work is often characterized by uncertain financial planning and bureaucratic hurdles make implementation difficult. In order to maintain the positive effects, stable financing is essential. In addition, the integration guides are confronted with social reservations that make their work more difficult.
The study is not just a snapshot, but a call for further research! In May 2024, a comprehensive study by the LSV will be published that will shed light on the value of sport in Schleswig-Holstein. The findings from the evaluation study are intended to further develop the “Sport for All – Sport with Refugees” project and to continue it successfully in the long term. It's clear: sport has the potential to connect people and build bridges!
