Dresden is fighting for Elbamare: City administration is aiming for better rental conditions!
Dresden. In a dramatic commitment to the future of the Elbamare, the leisure pool in Gorbitz, sports mayor Jan Donhauser (CDU) made it clear that the city wants to do everything it can to avert the threatened closure. “But not at any price,” Donhauser told the city council on Thursday evening. The pressure is enormous, because behind the scenes there is a poker game between the city and the pool owner Johannes Tebroke to clarify the conditions for continued operation.
The clock is ticking: the rental agreement with Tebroke runs until March 14, 2025, and the pool employees have already received their notices of termination. Donhauser knows that the financial conditions need to be reconsidered, as the city currently pays a shocking 2.1 million euros in rent annually, plus compensation for losses for the operation. “We want significantly better rental conditions if we extend the contract,” emphasizes the sports mayor resolutely.
City wants rent down from 2.1 million euros
A purchase of the Elbamare is also on the agenda. The city has commissioned two market value reports, which are now being examined. The aim is to reach an agreement with Tebroke by December, which will then be presented to the city council. The negotiations seem urgent because there are fears that the city council may act too late due to protracted debates and could close the pool on March 15, 2025.
The immediate goal is a transition agreement
In addition, the first budget draft from Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) does not provide any money for the operation of the Elbamare. The pressure on the city is immense, as it is the only covered swimming area in the west of Dresden, which is of great importance for numerous students and residents. Even worse: Due to financial bottlenecks, the replacement building for the dilapidated swimming pool in Klotzsche was canceled, and the long-awaited new building of the Sachsenbad remains an unfulfilled hope.
