Saarland plans to make railways: does the train traffic come back?

Fürstenhausen, Deutschland - In Saarland, an exciting turn in rail traffic is bought! Four railway lines could be reactivated, as the Environment and Mobility Minister Petra Berg (SPD) unveiled on Tuesday in a highly expected feasibility study. The affected routes are the Rosseltalbahn, the Bißtalbahn, the former Merzig Büschfelder Railway and the Primstalbahn. These plans could revolutionize the mobility network in Saarland!

But that's not all! The Homburg-Zweibrücken section is also to be put back into operation, while the reactivation of the Bliestahlbahn is not pursued further. Berg explained that the goal was to connect all routes to the existing S-Bahn cycle. An ambitious project that could revive the region on the rails!

years until commissioning

but be careful! The euphoria could stand out as premature. Despite the positive profitability test, which says that 90 percent of the construction costs are borne by the federal government, it could take years for the first trains to roll. The first passengers could start in eight to ten years at the earliest in eight to ten years. Before that, numerous old bridges have to be checked, train stations are renewed and the routes are expanded in two tracks. In the Warndt and Saargau there are over 40 bridges on the list!

financial hurdles?

The minister emphasized that the country wants to reactivate, but also the acceptance in the affected communities is decisive. Initial feedback from heads of administration show that although the desire for reactivation is great, many questions about financial feasibility are still open. In order to create clarity, information events in the municipalities concerned are planned for early summer. The future of rail traffic in Saarland remains exciting!
