Mainz increases wastewater fees: What that means for your wallet!
The people of Mainz have to prepare for higher wastewater fees! In a recent press release, the Mainz business company announced the increase in fees, which will come into force on January 1, 2025. The price for a cubic meter of dirty water rises to 2.04 euros - that's a whopping 42 cents more than before! It is also becoming more expensive for rainwater: in the future, 0.78 euros per square meter will be charged, which means an increase of 3 cents. For a single-person household, this adds up to around 1.58 euros per month for dirty water.
But that's not all! The fees in Mainz remain “still at the lower end” compared to other German cities, emphasizes CEO Jeanette Wetterling. Despite the increase, she assures us that everything is being done to work cost-effectively. The reason for the price adjustment is the sharp increase in costs for the operation and maintenance of the approximately 800 kilometer long sewer network and the sewage treatment plant. The expenses for a flushing vehicle have increased from 770,000 euros in 2021 to 940,000 euros!
Rising costs and necessary investments
The challenges are enormous: repairs such as the defective weir plate, the renewal of the pumping station in Rheinallee and the construction of a storage canal in Goethestrasse are driving up costs. The measures to deal with heavy rain events are also becoming increasingly expensive, as are wages and basic costs for personnel, energy and operating materials. In order to reduce expenses, the planned electrolysis to produce oxygen and hydrogen for the new 4th purification stage will not be implemented.
The business also appeals to Mainz residents to only put what they need down the drain “that belongs there”. Diapers, cotton swabs, leftover food and especially wet wipes have destroyed pumps in the past and caused costs in the six-figure range. A call for common sense so as not to increase sewage charges even further!
