Roman coin treasure in the Westerwald: Sensational find discovered!
In the Westerwald district, a detectorist has made a sensational find that has archaeologists excited! Beneath the forest floor, he came across an impressive collection of 2,490 Roman coins, dating back to the Roman Empire. The discovery, which was made in February 2024, was initially kept secret until the Koblenz State Archeology Department informed the public. These coins could be more than just material value - they are a window into the past!
A treasure with history
Timo Lang, head of the Koblenz branch of the state archeology, explained that the detectorist, who was working with a permit, did not unearth the coins himself, but immediately informed the experts. This shows the importance of the find, as such hoards are extremely rare in this region. The site is almost 20 km northeast of the Limes, which means that these coins may come from a time of crisis when the Gallic Empire tried to distance itself from the Roman Empire.
The precise identification of the coins is supported by complex CT examinations and analyzes of the origin of the silver. Lang suspects that the coins were either intended as bribes for Germanic tribes or as loot from a raid. The find could therefore shed light not only on the history of the region, but also on the political machinations of the Roman Empire.
Planned exhibition of the coins
Once the scientific evaluation is complete, an exhibition of the coins will be planned, which will allow the public to experience this unique treasure from Roman times up close. However, the exact time and place have not yet been determined. People's curiosity is piqued - who can't wait to take a look at these historical relics?
