Pirna in an internet traffic jam: Gigantic fiber optic project is delayed again!

Pirna.Despite big announcements and numerous deadlines, broadband expansion in Pirna remains a tragedy! The project was originally scheduled to be completed in summer 2022, but the final date has now been postponed to the end of April 2024. But the reality looks bleak - the major project is dragging on like chewing gum and the patience of the people of Pirna is at an end!

Vodafone is investing a whopping 9.5 million euros in expanding the fiber optic network, supported by the federal and state governments. More than 60 kilometers of civil engineering will be dug through the city to provide 1,121 households, 112 companies, two hospitals and 23 schools with fast internet. But where is the progress? The work, which was symbolically started in 2020, has been in limbo since 2021 due to countless delays - a nightmare for everyone involved!

No materials and sloppy planners

The problems are piling up: a lack of materials, Corona-related staff shortages and inadequate planning by the engineers commissioned have brought the construction project to a standstill. The situation is particularly catastrophic in the south of the city - work has come to a standstill, while in the north there is at least a small ray of hope. A crisis meeting between the city and Vodafone in August 2024 made the precarious situation clear; construction work had almost come to a standstill!

Things are moving faster in the north of Pirna

The city has now called for measures to clarify the desperate situation. A new plan from Vodafone stipulates that work in the south construction lot should be completed by the second half of 2025. Meanwhile, the civil engineering work in the north construction lot is scheduled to be completed by the end of October 2024 so that the first customers can finally go online. But will that really work? Time will tell, but the people of Pirna have run out of patience!
