A fascinating slide afternoon in the Culture + Congress Forum brought the people of Altöttingen's nostalgic memories to life! Toni Grundner's event was an emotional highlight that took the audience back in time. When the images of the old Mühldorfer Straße appeared on the screen, there was a collective “Oh my!” from the audience. Joy and sadness were in the air as those present reminisced and wondered what remained of the former splendor.

The “good old days” were evoked with a pinch of melancholy. Grundner presented not only nostalgic recordings, but also haunting evidence of a city that has changed significantly. His pictures, which will soon be published as a book, show a cityscape that is hardly recognizable anymore. The views, such as those from the old boys' school to the long-vanished girls' school, raised questions about the need for modernization and the preservation of historical heritage.

Memories of dark times

But not all memories were happy. The images from the war and post-war years brought back the dark past. The one-legged soldier in front of the “Twelve Apostles” inn and the wooden plaques on the war memorial commemorated the fallen soldiers. A ghostly photo of the Marienbrunnen, decorated with a wooden cross, cast a shadow over the event and served as a reminder of the responsibility of the regime at the time.

A short film about the new roof structure of the Chapel of Grace, which was installed with a US Army helicopter, provided an exciting finale to the afternoon. The town band accompanied the moment with “The Heavens Glory,” and the pilot was reminiscent of Burt Lancaster. Even less pleasant events, such as the postal bus accident in 1943, were not forgotten and rounded off the impressive program.
