Remscheid: Commuter stronghold! Over 26,000 work here from outside!
Remscheid is in the spotlight! More than 23,000 citizens of this vibrant city leave their homes every day to work in neighboring cities. And the best part? Over 26,000 commuters from other places come here, which results in a sensational commuter balance for the tool city!
The State Statistical Office recently updated the Commuter Atlas, and the numbers speak volumes: Emigration? No thanks! The largest number of Remscheid commuters go to Wuppertal (6359), followed by Wermelskirchen (2381) and Solingen (2152). Only then did the large cities of Düsseldorf (1491) and Cologne (1251) follow.
Impressive commuter flows
But that's not all: mobility also works in the other direction! Most commuters also come from the immediate neighborhood - Wuppertal (6789), Wermelskirchen (3044) and Solingen (2117) take the top places. This is unusual for a city like Remscheid, because more people move to work here than leave.
In general, a larger city attracts more commuters, and yet the numbers in Remscheid are remarkable. Even from Wuppertal, which is three times larger, more people commute to Remscheid than the other way around. The exchange with large cities like Cologne shows similar numbers: While 1,251 Remscheid residents travel to work in the heart of the cathedral city, 948 Cologne residents also flock to the tool city!
Causes and Attractions
Why is that? Opinions differ! A positive commuter balance could speak for Remscheid's robust economy, which attracts skilled workers from the surrounding area, the Rhineland and the Ruhr area. Or is it an indicator of inadequate housing options in Remscheid, which is driving young families to neighboring towns? There is probably a combination of both factors!
