Zverev fails in the semi-finals: Fritz stops German tennis dreams!
Turin (dpa) – A dramatic tennis duel ended for Alexander Zverev without the happy ending he had hoped for! The German tennis star, currently ranked second in the world, was defeated by US Open finalist Taylor Fritz in the semi-finals of the ATP Finals. With a narrow 3:6, 6:3, 6:7 (3:7), Zverev missed out on a place in the final, thus ending a turbulent year without a tournament win.
The game was a real thriller, full of exciting rallies and emotional ups and downs. In the decisive tiebreak, Zverev quickly fell behind and was unable to catch up. Instead of fighting for the title, the German number one now has to go on vacation. Fritz remains a fearful opponent for Zverev, who once again ruined his dreams of a significant tournament victory.
German hope in doubles
But not everything is lost for German tennis fans! On Sunday, doubles players Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz can ensure a brilliant German tennis festival after surprisingly making it to the final. In a thrilling semi-final they turned around a significant deficit and prevailed against the Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson.
The atmosphere in the 13,000-strong arena was electric when Zverev took the court. But the first sets clearly belonged to Fritz, who put Zverev's serve game under pressure early on. After a rocky start, Zverev found his way into the game better in the second set, but the decisive points in the tiebreak went to Fritz, who ended Zverev's hopes of another title in 2024.
While Zverev prepares for the next season, Krawietz and Pütz are celebrating a historic success. They are the first German doubles team to reach the final in the tournament's 55-year history. Krawietz is enthusiastic: “To be here in the final is something special, absolutely!”
