Cologne (ots) - A massive operation by Cologne customs caused a stir on the A1, A3, A4 and federal highway 496 on November 12, 2024! A total of 170 people from the forwarding, transport and logistics industry were put through their paces. Around 80 customs officers, supported by police forces and the Federal Network Agency, took strict action against possible violations.
The checks produced alarming results: 40 people were checked on the A1, 77 on the A3, while 12 and 41 people were checked on the A4 and B496 respectively. Maja Ley, press spokeswoman for the Cologne Main Customs Office, explained that the main goal of this campaign was compliance with social security obligations and the minimum wage. In addition, illegal employment, false self-employment and the abuse of social benefits should be uncovered.
Results of the controls
The results of the measure are shocking: in three cases, suspicions have already been expressed on site that the employees are not being paid the minimum wage. There is also evidence of benefit fraud in three other cases, two of them in the Rhein-Erft district. Illegal stay was also detected and in two cases the required identification documents were missing. Suspicions regarding violations in the context of temporary employment were registered with four people, while two others were found without the necessary work permits.
Important for all employees in these industries: Anyone who works in freight forwarding, transport or logistics must always carry a valid ID with them while working. Further information can be found on the customs website.
