ASV Hamm welcomes surprise team TuS Ferndorf: This is how it continues!

Next Saturday there is an exciting duel in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga: ASV Hamm-Westfalen meets TuS Ferndorf, who have had an excellent start to the season. With 8:2 points from five games, Ferndorf is undoubtedly one of the surprise teams in the league. It seems as if the newly promoted club, which made it to the second division last season, is well prepared for the challenges that await it.

Backcourt shooter Andreas Bornemann, who had to miss the first four games due to injury, will also return to the pitch. With the goal of finally getting his first win, the game against his former club will be a special challenge for him. "It's about important points. That's why you have to ignore the past," emphasizes Bornemann. After all, he was under contract with TuS Ferndorf from 2019 to 2022.

A respected but not to be feared opponent

ASV coach Michael Hegemann describes Ferndorf as “the team of the hour” that has shown outstanding performances. The statistics speak for themselves: of the first five games, the team won three at home and one away. They suffered their only defeat against Tusem Essen. These successes have not only earned TuS points, but also respect in the league. But Bornemann remains pragmatic: “Ferndorf is still a newcomer – albeit one with extremely good quality.”

Bornemann particularly emphasizes TuS's strong defense, which was already considered a trademark during his time under coach Robert Andersson. “The aggressive defensive work will be a challenge for us,” he warns, pointing out the importance of the pivots in the attack.

The key player

An outstanding player in the TuS Ferndorf team is the 38-year-old Croatian Janko Kevic, an experienced playmaker with a great understanding of the game. Hegemann highlights its importance and points to the tactical challenges that the ASV's defensive work requires. “We have to stretch to find a solution against the aggressive 6-0 defense,” said Hegemann.

The ASV is also aware of how strong TuS Ferndorf performed in the last preparation when they defeated the team 36:22. Bornemann therefore sees the enormous importance of actively shaping the game right from the start. “We have to show our presence,” he demands. Ceven Klatt, the TuS coach, also expects this.

Lack of team substance

The personnel situation in the ASV camp remains tense. After the defeat against the Eulen Ludwigshafen, the hope of returning and improving the situation is becoming more and more urgent. With the absence of goalkeeper Marcos Colodeti and other important players such as Jakub Sterba and Tom Jansen, the squad is significantly reduced. Hegemann admits that the situation has actually worsened as the use of Ian Hütter remains questionable. “The staffing level is thin,” he warned, although there is the possibility that Nikolas Körber from the second team will step in, but he is also out due to illness.

Regardless of the personnel challenges, Hegemann is aware that the team has to work in the areas of completion rate and defensive stability: “The processes have to be implemented more quickly.” While ASV prepares for a decisive game, TuS Ferndorf is not only seen as an opponent, but also as a test for Hamm-Westphalia's current form and team spirit.
