Dortmund's new garbage rules: emptying for a fee is causing a stir!

The city of Dortmund is planning a radical change in waste disposal! From November 14th, the city council will decide on new regulations that will affect many households. Citizens should have more space on their properties by allowing neighboring properties to share recycling and waste paper bins. This means that two households can share a large yellow and blue bin - a measure that is already being successfully implemented with organic waste bins.

New trash service and removal of existing options

But that's not all: Dortmund is introducing a new waste service while simultaneously axing a popular option. From now on, citizens can have waste paper bins with a capacity of 120 liters emptied every two weeks - but for a fee! Previously, this service was only available for larger 240 liter bins. The usual four-week emptying remains free of charge, but there is one important rule: pizza boxes do not belong in the waste paper bin!

However, the weekly emptying of the 240 liter bins, which is subject to a fee, will be completely abolished. According to the city administration, this service has been little used since it was introduced in 2020 - only 39 paper bins across the city were emptied weekly. The reason for this decision? Citizens can dispose of their waste paper free of charge at recycling centers. But before these changes come into effect, the city council must give its approval.
