Vienna Festival: All About Earthquakes” – love in the earthquake frenzy!

The cultural event “All About Earthquakes” premiered on May 25, 2025 at the Vienna Festival Weeks. The production, directed by Christopher Rüping, one of the most important directors of his generation, addresses the tension between love and political conflicts in an unusual way. Rau, who organizes the festival, sees the platform as a forum for current discourse issues and plays with humorous elements.

The production is a co-production with the Schauspielhaus Bochum and brings together a diverse ensemble of 13 actors and one musician. The main actors include the experienced Elsie de Brauw and the 24-year-old Moses Leo, whose different backgrounds in skin color and age enrich the plot and stimulate a dialogue about social norms.

Main content areas

The performance begins with an entertaining memory of an earthquake, narrated by a Cypriot actress. The piece also references the novella “The Earthquake in Chili” by Heinrich von Kleist, which tells of a historic earthquake in Santiago de Chile in 1647. This literary allusion initiates a deeper examination of the question of non-hierarchical work in groups.

A central theory lesson integrated into the production highlights the concept of love as a political strategy. The plot then changes from humorous scenes to a dark, dark interlude where the utopia of love ends in a bloodbath in the 17th century. This shows how closely love and violence can be intertwined and encourages viewers to think about the current challenges facing our society.
