Bochum becomes a cybersecurity center: Construction of the MPI-SP starts now!

On October 21, 2024, the groundbreaking ceremony at Mark 51'7 not only heralded the start of construction of the ultra-modern Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy (MPI-SP), but also set a big example for the future of cybersecurity research. In the shadow of pouring rain, important figures from politics and science gathered to witness this historic moment. “We are pleased to start the construction of our new institute building today,” explained the managing director Prof. Dr. Peter Schwabe with a beaming look in his opening speech.

Bochum is becoming the center of cybersecurity

NRW Minister for Culture and Science, Ina Brandes, emphasized that not only a new building is being built on the former Opel site, but also a home for top international research. “Leadership in cybersecurity and significant progress for the future are being made here in Bochum!” she emphasized. District mayor Gaby Schäfer was also proud of the transformation of the area into an innovative research center, which positions over 500 IT companies in Bochum as a “hotspot for cybersecurity”.

The decision to establish the MPI-SP in Bochum is based on a vision of the former Max Planck President, Prof. Dr. Martin Stratmann: Scientific excellence as a driver for economic and social change. “The Ruhr area already has an excellent research infrastructure that fits our ambitions perfectly,” added Dr. Simone Schwanitz from the Max Planck Society added.

The founding director Prof. Dr. Christof Paar emphasized the close cooperation with the Ruhr University, which has been contributing to the establishment of the MPI-SP since 2019. Particularly important is the integration of the Faculty of Computer Science, which will also find a new home on the former Opel factory site, as RUB Vice-Rector Prof. Dr. Günter Meschke confirmed. The anticipation and pioneering spirit are palpable as the foundation is laid for a bright future in cybersecurity.
