Lights of Hope: Day of Remembrance for Deceased Children in MV
On today's 2nd Advent, December 8th, 2024, numerous events will take place in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to commemorate the deceased children and especially the so-called star children. Around five out of 1,000 children in Germany die before or during birth, and this sad reality is not forgotten at the commemorations. Relatives and affected families are invited to light candles together, a symbolic sign that the deceased will never be forgotten. In cities like Stralsund and Greifswald there are special commemorations today, organized by Protestant and Catholic hospital chaplains, which take place at 2 p.m. in the central cemetery in Stralsund and at 3 p.m. in Greifswald Cathedral, where the topic of “wind” plays a central role, according to Pastor Brita Bartels.
Various commemorative events in MV
In addition to the events in Stralsund and Greifswald, further commemorations will take place at various locations in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania throughout the evening. In the Doberan Minster, the collegiate church in Ludwigslust, at the association “Das Boot e.V.” Commemorations are planned in Wismar, in the Schwerin Cathedral, in the Barth Bible Center and in the St. Georgenkirche in Parchim from 5 p.m. Particularly noteworthy is the commemoration with music in Neubrandenburg, which will take place on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. in the meeting center of the St. Michael parish. These events offer affected families an important opportunity to share their pain and keep the memory of their children alive, like this NDR reported.
In parallel to these moving memorial events, there are also language education offerings that help many people express their thoughts about it. The platform Gymglish offers online German courses that aim to improve grammar and the use of the German language. These courses not only promote understanding but also provide valuable support for those seeking to share their thoughts and feelings in a second language, particularly in such emotional matters as remembering deceased children.
