Kunsthaus Göttingen on the brink of extinction: Steidl is fighting to be saved!

Göttingen.A dramatic setback for the art scene: The Göttingen Kunsthaus, which finally opened after almost 50 years of planning, is about to close! The city's finance committee decided not to provide 200,000 euros for operations. Publisher Gerhard Steidl, who played a key role in driving the project forward, is horrified and sees the decision as a sign of ignorance of the cultural significance of the house.

“We are back where we started in 1973,” said Steidl. The city has the chance to create a center for contemporary art, and now everything is in danger of being lost again. “The exhibitions are not district class,” he emphasizes and calls on politicians to recognize the importance of the Kunsthaus for tourism. “People travel specifically to see our exhibitions!” But the marketing of the art house is inadequate, and many people in Göttingen don't even know about it.

The future of the art house

Steidl sounds the alarm: “We need more support!” He is convinced that the 200,000 euros can be raised if everyone pulls together. “I would donate 30,000 euros immediately!” He could also work with renowned artists such as Bryan Adams and Karl Lagerfeld to create spectacular exhibitions. “We attract thousands of visitors with blockbuster exhibitions like this!” But the city must finally set the course for this.

“The Finance Committee’s decision is short-sighted,” criticizes Steidl. He calls for a rethink and serious support for culture in Göttingen. “Art and culture are delicate plants that need time and care.” The closure of the Kunsthaus would be a bitter loss for the city and the art scene, which has only just established itself. “We must preserve and promote Göttingen’s cultural landscape!”
