Climate conference in Baku: Aid organizations demand billions for adaptation

In a dire warning ahead of the COP29 climate conference in Baku, aid organizations such as CARE, World Vision and ADRA emphasize the urgency of dramatically increasing climate finance for the most affected communities in the global south. The climate crisis is taking its toll, and as the damage mounts, it is often local communities that bear the heaviest burdens. Experts estimate that the necessary funds must not only be in billions, but in trillions of euros. “Not acting is significantly more expensive,” warn the organizations and call on industrialized nations to live up to their responsibilities.

Call for more support for climate adaptation

More money is the key to better living conditions, so aid organizations on the ground are immediately pushing for increased humanitarian funding for climate adaptation. “There needs to be greater consideration of humanitarian aspects,” explains Carina Rolly from ADRA. “COP29 is an opportunity to rebuild trust and create participatory processes that engage local communities.” The goal is clear: an inclusive climate policy that works with grants and not loans to break the cycle of debt in developing countries.

Marlene Achoki from CARE International explains: “The costs of inaction are significantly higher than the costs of action.” The need to increase climate finance is essential to mitigate the consequences for people and the environment.

Industrialized countries must take responsibility

While many communities are already suffering from the devastating consequences of climate change - be it through increased crop failures or uninhabitable home regions - World Vision calls for serious addressing of the damage that has already occurred. “The fund to compensate for climate-related damage should be provided with sufficient resources,” said Ekkehard Forberg. “Loans only deepen the debt crisis, while direct grants to children and local communities are urgently needed.” The call for immediate action is loud and clear – the time to act is now!
