Fireplace stoves in sight: Stricter rules from 2025 – What you need to know!
Important changes are just around the corner for fireplace owners in Germany! From January 1, 2025, around 46,000 stoves and fireplaces that were put into operation between 1995 and 2010 will have to comply with strict emission limits. According to the chimney sweeps' association, the final deadline is December 31, 2024, by which compliance with the new guidelines must be proven. These new regulations are anchored in the Federal Immission Control Act and require that the stove does not emit more than 0.15 grams of dust and four grams of carbon monoxide per cubic meter of exhaust gas.
Proof of emission limit values
As the German craft newspaper reported, there are two options for proof: either through a certificate from the manufacturer or through a measurement by the responsible chimney sweep. Experts say the check could have already taken place in the past as part of a regular fireplace inspection. Owners of older stoves should check their documents or check the HKI database to obtain the relevant information about their stove.
If a fireplace does not meet the required limits, there are various options. Owners can either consider retrofitting to include any dust control devices that may become necessary, or they can choose to purchase new. Experts often recommend replacing them because modern stoves heat more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way. Otherwise you could face penalties of up to 50,000 euros. Stoves that comply with the limit values may be operated indefinitely, while devices that do not must be shut down.
Particularly important: Open fireplaces, historic stoves before 1950 and other special appliances are exempt from the new requirements. This law now brings clarity and the need for action for fireplace owners who want to be well prepared for the cold months, but also need to ensure that their fireplaces meet the legal requirements.
