Young driver rolls over while avoiding a deer in Carinthia

Late on Thursday evening there was a traffic accident on Seebergstrasse (B82) near Mittertrixen in which a 17-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle. He swerved to avoid a crossing deer and skidded. The car overturned and came to a stop about ten meters off the road in a corn field. The young driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Klagenfurt Hospital. An alcohol test revealed no influence of alcohol, which made the investigators focus even more on the cause of the accident. It is suspected that an inappropriate speed led to the skid, as Kleine Zeitung reports.

The Gattersdorf volunteer fire department was deployed with 15 members to secure the accident site and support the clean-up work. While the investigation into the exact cause of the accident is still ongoing, it is clear that accidents involving wildlife, particularly at night, are a recurring problem. Around 265,000 wildlife accidents are registered in Germany every year, and the risk of encountering a wild animal is highest in the evening and early morning hours. This is also supported by information from ADAC, which also points out that the integration of wild animal detection into modern safety systems, such as emergency braking assistants, is urgently needed.

Wildlife accidents and their consequences

The incident on the B82 is a reminder of how important it is to drive proactively near forests and fields. Wild animals can cross the road at any time, which can lead to dangerous situations. Experts recommend driving particularly carefully and paying attention to signs at game crossings. In the event of a collision with furred game, partially comprehensive insurance usually covers the costs of damage to the vehicle. However, in the case of evasive maneuvers, there can also be complicated questions regarding claims settlement, as proof is often difficult.

In the event of an accident involving wildlife, it is important to react correctly. The hazard warning lights should be switched on, the driver must put on his safety vest and secure the scene of the accident. The police should then be contacted immediately. Deaths of wild animals are particularly tragic and require a sensitive approach as they cannot be easily removed from the scene of the accident.
