Grand Josef Krainer Prize: Styrians with heart are honored!
The prestigious Josef Krainer Prizes were awarded in the auditorium of the Old University of Graz on March 17, 2025, an award that has been presented since 1973 during the Styrian state holiday, Josefitag. Among the guests of honor were State Parliament President Gerald Deutschmann and Deputy State Governor Manuela Khom, who presented the awards in memory of the former State Governor Josef Krainer. Personalities were honored for outstanding achievements and commitment in various areas, including the renowned actor Friedrich von Thun and the entrepreneur Charly Temmel, who received the Grand Josef Krainer Prize ORF Steiermark reported.
Friedrich von Thun, who has lived in Germany since the 1960s, described his close connection to Styria and remembered formative experiences from his childhood. “I fished my first bicycle out of the Mur – completely rusty,” says von Thun. Charly Temmel, known as the “Ice Prince”, emphasized his deep connection to his homeland and acknowledged the importance of Josef Krainer for the country. In addition to the main prize winners, three Styrian scientists, Nicole Golob-Schwarzl, Marlene Kienberger and Corinna Perchtold-Stefan, were also awarded a Josef Krainer Appreciation Prize, while eight other personalities received various Josef Krainer sponsorship prizes, such as Politics Styria reported.
In his speech, State Parliament President Gerald Deutschmann underlined the importance of the awards and emphasized that the achievements of the award winners are a sign of what can be achieved with passion and dedication. He explained that the Josef Krainer Prizes not only honor the past, but also look to the future. “The people honored today show why Styria is recognized as a country of research, development and culture,” he said and thanked the award winners for their commitment to the benefit of society. In the festive atmosphere of the award ceremony, numerous prominent guests were present who shared this special moment with the winners.
