Major operation in Fechenheim: warehouse is on fire!
On Tuesday night, a warehouse in the Fechenheim district of Frankfurt am Main burned ablaze. The fire department received the alarm around 9 p.m. after numerous callers reported sightings of smoke and flames. The first firefighters who arrived on Ferdinand-Porsche-Straße confirmed the reports and saw meter-high flames shooting out of the roof of the hall. A column of black smoke was visible from afar even in the darkness and alerted residents.
Extinguishing work was carried out immediately and further assistance was frivolously requested. The fire spread quickly and parts of the warehouse collapsed shortly after fighting began. The fire department focused on protecting the approximately 4,100 square meter untouched part of the hall. Large amounts of fire-fighting water were taken from the nearby Main and directed to the burning areas using water cannons. In order to safely extinguish the flames, extinguishing foam was ultimately used. It was impossible to enter the affected hall due to the acute risk of collapse.
Warnings and actions
The heavy smoke caused odor nuisance in the city, which prompted the fire department to inform the population via warning apps. These alerts were updated intermittently during deployment. Fire department measuring vehicles carried out pollution measurements in the area to ensure that there was no danger to residents.
The fire has now been brought under control. The operations of the professional fire brigade and the volunteer fire brigades from the surrounding districts should continue at night in order to safely rule out any remaining risk of fire. Information about the contents of the warehouse is currently not available as entry is still not permitted and the cause of the fire cannot be revealed.
A detailed press release detailing the number of forces and vehicles deployed is expected to be issued on Wednesday. The situation remains tense, but the fire department is ensuring that the safety of the public remains guaranteed without any danger from the fire or smoke.
