EM 2028: Hosts have to show in qualification that they are worth it!

On May 21, 2025, UEFA published crucial information about the 2028 European Football Championship. Accordingly, the tournament will take place from June 9th to July 9th, 2028, with England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland acting as hosts. Despite hosting the tournament in these four nations, the hosts will not receive a free ticket to the European Championships, as krone.at reports. All four nations have to prove themselves in one of twelve qualifying groups.

Two reserved places will be allocated for the two best hosts, provided they do not qualify directly. The qualification itself is held in groups of four or five teams each. The twelve group winners and the eight best runners-up in the group qualify directly.

Stadiums and infrastructure

The 2028 European Championship will be held in a total of nine stadiums, six of which are in England. Glasgow, Cardiff and Dublin are the other venues. According to Wikipedia, associations had to present at least ten stadiums with different capacities in their application, including one with over 60,000 seats.

However, Northern Ireland could struggle to host. Windsor Park does not meet the required standards and the British government has announced that it will not provide funding for the new construction of Casement Park because costs have risen dramatically. Discussions with UEFA about Northern Ireland's role are already planned. A temporary stadium in Belfast is even being considered to accommodate five games in Northern Ireland.

Qualifications and preparations

Qualification for the Euro 2024, which is scheduled to take place in 2024, has already been completed, with Germany automatically qualified as hosts. For the 2028 European Championship, 53 participating nations have to compete against each other in ten groups, with the draw for the qualifying groups taking place on October 9, 2022. The qualifying group games covered several matchdays between March and November 2023, with the remaining places being awarded through a play-off tournament that will take place in March 2024, according to Wikipedia.

Several broadcasters have already concluded contracts for the broadcasting rights for EM-2024 and EM-2028. Das Erste and ZDF have secured the rights for all 51 games in the final tournament, while ServusTV has acquired broadcast rights for special qualifying games.
