Eichstätt's Treasure: Medieval Manuscript now online for free!
Get ready for an exciting digital discovery! The Pontifical Gundekarianum, one of the most valuable medieval manuscripts of the Eichstätt diocese, is now online! This incredible manuscript, considered the most important of its kind, was initiated by Gundekar II, Bishop of Eichstätt in the 11th century, and offers a spectacular collection of liturgical texts, diocesan chronicles and a list of bishops, added to over the centuries.
Fantastic miniatures and the impressive history of the diocese are waiting to be discovered! This manuscript, officially called Codex B 4, is the greatest treasure of the diocesan archives and has survived the centuries surprisingly well. The colorful illustrations, which come from three different eras, shine in their full glory. A team of experts led by Dr. Ferdinand Sturm carefully preserved the original after it was entrusted by the cathedral chapter.
