Volunteering in Bitterfeld: Citizens honored for their selfless commitment!

On December 5th, Volunteer Day was celebrated internationally, a day of honor for the quiet heroes of our society who often achieve great things unnoticed. A special recognition event by the volunteer agency “MehrWERT” took place in the multi-generational house in Wolfen-Nord. Numerous volunteers from the district came together there to be recognized for their remarkable commitment. Melanie Kerz, who opened the event, made it clear: “Today you play first violin.” Mayor Armin Schenk (CDU) emphasized the importance of volunteers in his speech: “It is quickly forgotten what citizens do for others.” The children from the Steinfurth primary school were also actively represented with a musical contribution, which delighted those present and created a better atmosphere mz.de reported.

As part of the festival, ten outstanding volunteers were awarded the EngagementCard 2024. This card, worth around 250 euros, was awarded by the biworegio e.V. volunteer agency and contains vouchers from 13 regional companies. Mayor Heike Krauel personally acknowledged the award winners and emphasized the emotional significance of volunteering. The ceremony was characterized by a lot of gratitude and recognition, which touched not only the award winners but also the organizers.

Importance of volunteering

According to Tobias Kemnitzer, managing director of the Federal Association of Voluntary Agencies (Bagfa), volunteering is crucial for becoming human by strengthening social bonds and democratic values. But there are challenges in volunteering: While some volunteers are released by employers for assignments, this does not apply to all. Many volunteers, especially from aid organizations such as the ASB or the Red Cross, have to take vacation or sacrifice their free time in order to be able to help in emergencies. The Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Deutschland pointed out that there is a lack of a uniform legal regulation that could remedy this inequality wdr.de reported. This highlights the challenges that volunteers face while carrying out important social functions.
