E-patient file starts: Hardly any objection from insured people expected!

Hardly any resistance to the revolution in healthcare! The impending introduction of the electronic patient record (ePA) is currently causing little stir among Germany's 75 million people with statutory health insurance. As a survey by the German Press Agency shows, only a few insured people have expressed concerns about the automatic creation of their ePA. This digital file, which stores all health data centrally, could soon become a reality.

The countdown is running! Since the summer, an extensive campaign has been informing those insured about the ePA, which will be available to everyone from January. Only a small percentage have so far lodged an objection, and the numbers are revealing: at AOK, Techniker Krankenkasse (TK), Barmer and DAK, the insured largely agree with this digital innovation. At AOK, only 1 percent of those insured lodged an objection, and even the TK recorded a percentage in the low single-digit range. “We have only received a few contradictions,” confirms a Barmer spokesman. The trust seems to be great!

The future of digitized healthcare

“The electronic patient file is more than overdue,” says Doris Pfeiffer, Chairwoman of the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds. She described the initial feedback as a “very good interim result” and sees the ePA as a “great opportunity to sustainably improve people’s care”. The ePA will be introduced nationwide on January 15th, unless the insured have objected.

What is at stake? The ePA promises to become an indispensable digital companion! Patients can access their data via an app and insert documents such as findings and laboratory values themselves. This digital storage is intended not only to facilitate communication between doctors, but also to quickly provide vital information in emergencies. Test operations will begin in two model regions in mid-January, before the entire Federal Republic follows in March. However, data protection advocates are critical of the objection solution - so the excitement continues!
