A triumphant evening for WDR – three prizes at the Bremen Television and Digital Prize! The Lokalzeit from Düsseldorf won the title for “Best Current Video” on Friday evening, November 8, 2024, with a captivating report about the overcrowded queues in the Mönchengladbach citizens' office. Darkness is falling, but the audience is wide awake as reporter Björn Henke joins the queue at 3 a.m. to give a voice to citizens desperately waiting for help. “We listen and uncover things,” says WDR editor-in-chief Gabi Ludwig proudly.
Insight into the “Gammel Oasis”
The Lokalzeit Dortmund shone in the “Best Constructive Video” category with the fascinating story about a dementia shared apartment in Marl. The article “Chaos as Therapy in the Dementia Shared Share” makes hearts beat faster when Justine Rosenkranz introduces the first Gammel Oasis in Germany - a place where 14 people with dementia should discover their freedom. Gabi Ludwig praises the creative work of the Dortmund team, which provides insights into individual fates with sensitivity and journalistic skills.
A prize that touches the heart
But that's not all! The audience award “Close to it” went to the touching story “Martina celebrates her own funeral” from the local newspaper Duisburg on April 9, 2024. In this emotional article we accompanied Martina, who, despite her cancer, decided to organize her own funeral as a cheerful celebration, where she remarked: “The best party of my life”. Gabi Ludwig emphasizes how close and personal the WDR reports are, which met with a huge response on social media and on television.
The Bremen Television and Digital Prize, a renowned event that honors the best regional media projects, impressively shows the region's creativity and closeness to its people. 20 coveted nominations were drawn from 180 submissions, while the audience had the opportunity to vote for the stories that moved them most. The award ceremony took place under the moderation of Frank Plasberg and is celebrated as one of the highlights of the media year.
