Renovation of the Albrechtsgrotte: Experts check cracks in the monument!
In Knoops Park, the Albrecht Grotto is under intensive observation! The historic structure, which looks like a mini-hut, has been protected by wooden scaffolding for almost a year. The reason? Massive cracks threaten the stability of the grotto, and the State Office for Monument Preservation has erected the roof to prevent further damage. But despite the protective measures, the grotto remains silent for the time being - a forced break is necessary to check the static stability.
Tim Schrader from the State Office for Monument Preservation explains: “We have to observe whether the grotto is moving and whether the cracks are getting bigger.” For this purpose, measuring points were installed to check every few months whether anything had changed in the grotto. The cave is located on a slope and seasonal changes could affect its stability. The experts have already documented all the cracks and are optimistic that the renovation will be successful, as no movement has been detected so far.
Redevelopment plans in progress
A specialized architectural firm is working on a renovation plan and determining the costs for the urgently needed repairs. The dismantling began when the Bremen environmental company wanted to renovate the terrace, which had been closed since 2018. But when the concrete layers were removed, massive cracks emerged that threatened the stability. Demolition was recommended, but the monument office intervened because the grotto is a listed building. After the concrete ceiling was removed, the historic masonry was revealed and the extent of the damage became visible.
The good news? The experts recorded all the details of the structure and secured loose stones so that they could be reinstalled later. The Knoops Park development association plans to help finance the renovation and possibly collect donations. Preparations for the renovation are in full swing and those responsible hope to be able to start work soon!
