The legend of Stagges Hotel: A cult place for generations in Scharmbeck
Stagges Hotel in Osterholz-Scharmbeck, a place full of legends and memories, has captured the hearts of many young people since it opened in February 1964. Fritz Stagge, who was only 20 years old at the time, transformed his mother's hall into a cult disco that served as a meeting place for generations for over 35 years. Not only did people dance here, but they also created a community that rebelled against social norms. “People went to Fritz,” remembers Reinhold “Poldi” Martin, a long-time friend and colleague, who vividly describes the atmosphere and music of the time.
A place of freedom
Stagges Hotel was more than just a disco; it was a retreat for all those who were different. Young people who wanted to escape bourgeois expectations found a place to live their life here. Fritz Stagge, known for his tolerance, opened his doors to everyone, regardless of appearance or origin. But there were also clear rules: hard drugs were taboo. Legend has it that Fritz once personally kicked out a heavily intoxicated guest to ensure the safety and fun of his other guests.
However, relations with the authorities were strained. Stagges Hotel was often in the sights of the regulatory authorities, who had an eye on child protection and fire protection. Despite these challenges, the hotel remained a popular meeting place and center for cultural events. In the 70s and 80s the space was transformed into a leisure center with concerts, dance evenings and cultural events organized by Fritz and his friends.
A musical legacy
The musical diversity of the Stagges Hotel was impressive. From blues to rock to psychedelic, numerous DJs ensured that the dance floor was never empty. Legendary artists like Herman Brood performed, and the atmosphere was one of a mix of freedom and community spirit. Even though the disco is now closed, the legend lives on: former employees and guests continue to host club evenings, and the memories of the unforgettable nights at Stagges Hotel will last forever.
