Ulm: The city with the shortest name in Germany!
Ulm is the only city in Baden-Württemberg that has the shortest name in the ranking of the 82 major cities in Germany. The name “Ulm” could possibly be derived from the elm tree species common in the region. Geographically, Ulm is located at the confluence of the Danube, Iller and Blau rivers. Interestingly, the name has changed over the years, with the “e” disappearing from the word.
Among the major cities, Cologne, Hamm, Kiel and Jena share second place for the shortest city names. Large cities in Germany are defined as cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. One of the most famous sights in Ulm is the Ulm Minster, which is considered the tallest church building in the world.
A striking tongue twister
The old town of Ulm, which lies directly on the banks of the Danube, not only has a rich history, but also a well-known tongue twister: “In Ulm, around Ulm and around Ulm.” This expression shows the playful connection between the region and its name and contributes to Ulm's cultural identity.
