Christmas in Berlin: BVG warns of changes to tram traffic!

Things will soon be a little quieter in Berlin during the holidays, as many newcomers have packed their bags and traveled back home. This means a welcome period of rest for the original Berliners, while the city is freed from tourists and festive stress. But one thing is clouding Berliners' anticipation of the days off: the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) has to accept certain restrictions due to construction sites and a high holiday staffing schedule. For example, tram lines 21 and 37 have been faced with replacement traffic since Christmas Eve Berlin Live reported. This affects the routes between S+U Lichtenberg/Gudrunstraße and S Schöneweide. Information on the duration of the construction sites is not yet available.

Special challenges on New Year's Eve

However, the BVG has also prepared for the special requirements for New Year's Eve. A total of around 3,900 employees are on duty on Christmas Eve and ensure that passengers reach their destination safely. But celebrating on the streets also brings difficulties. Bus delays are unavoidable and the BVG asks its passengers for their understanding. Flexibility is the key here: if necessary, lines will be rerouted or temporarily unavailable. As a recommended alternative, the BVG encourages Berliners to switch to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn on New Year's Eve to ensure a smoother journey, such as Berlin newspaper made clear.

The challenges on New Year's Eve are not new, as last year some bus routes suffered from serious incidents, including assaults and fireworks attacks. Security forces and BVG employees are in constant communication in order to be able to react to the traffic situation and any disruptions.
