Scholz as candidate for chancellor: SPD draws a line on the K issue!

Berlin – The SPD is going into the election campaign with full force! With the renewed nomination of Olaf Scholz as candidate for chancellor, the party wants to finally end the tough debate about the K question. A heated argument raged for two weeks over whether the popular Defense Minister Boris Pistorius should replace Scholz. But Pistorius rejected his candidacy on Thursday, paving the way for Scholz!

Dispute and criticism in the SPD

The hanging section left its mark. At the Federal Congress of the Young Socialists (Juso) there was harsh criticism of the party leadership. Juso boss Philipp Türmer spoke of a “shit show” and accused party leaders Saskia Esken and Lars Klingbeil of leadership failure. Esken himself admitted: “We didn’t give a really good impression when we nominated our candidate for chancellor.” However, Klingbeil defended the culture of debate within the party and called on everyone to look forward and concentrate on the election on February 23rd.

Scholz now has to be confirmed at the party conference on January 11th, where he will have to be measured against his impressive result of 96.2 percent from 2021. Despite current polls showing the SPD at between 14 and 16 percent, there is hope for a turning point. The SPD plans to focus the election campaign on the duel between Scholz and the Union candidate Friedrich Merz, relying on Scholz's government experience.

A historic race

For the first time in history, there are four candidates for chancellor: In addition to Scholz and Merz, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck from the Greens is also running, and the AfD will nominate Alice Weidel on December 7th. The tension is rising and voters are curious to see whether Scholz can present himself as the combative leader that the SPD needs now. Alexander Schweitzer, Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, calls for a strong Olaf Scholz who has clear visions for the future. The time for moderation is over – now the fighting spirit counts!
