New government district in Berlin: The countdown to forming a coalition is on!
Following the federal election, Berlin will become a center of political activity - this is reported OE24. From February 24th, the leadership bodies of all parties will begin to analyze the election results and the parliamentary groups in the Bundestag will be formed. As the winners prepare to form a government, the losers may have to consider resignations to clarify their position. A crucial date is March 25th, when the new Bundestag must meet at the latest. This emerges from the Basic Law, specifically from Article 39, which regulates the deadlines for the constituent session.
Coalition negotiations and transitional government
The coming negotiations about possible coalitions will be heavily influenced by the mood within the parties. As well as the Bundestag clarifies, all MPs must take up their positions by March 25th at the latest. This forms the framework within which personnel decisions such as the election of the President of the Bundestag are made. The CDU chairman Friedrich Merz in particular expresses the hope that after a possible election victory, the government could be ready for action by the Easter holidays. During this transition period, the Federal President will ask the current Chancellor to continue running the business until a successor is appointed, which will ensure the government's ability to act.
Politically, the situation remains tense as the parties prepare for different options for forming coalitions. The methodology for approving a coalition agreement will be crucial to how quickly a functioning government can be installed. Discrepancies in negotiations could lead to delays, complicating the process. Until a final agreement is reached and a new government is appointed, the question of future political stability in Germany and the ability of the current government to act during the transition phase remains open.
