Carnival magic in Vienna: A Night in Venice” rediscovered!
On October 26, 2025, the operetta “One Night in Venice” by Johann Strauss II celebrated its performance at the Vienna Volksoper. Directed by Nina Spijkers and musically conducted by Alexander Joel, audiences will be delighted with a contemporary retelling of the classic story set during Carnival in Venice. The women not only appear dominant, but also intervene in their men's affairs, which is particularly illustrated by the character of Barbara, played by Ulrike Steinsky. She has relationships with younger men, while the nervous Duke Guido, played by Lucian Krasznec, takes on a more passive role.
The plot is characterized by mix-ups and role reversals, typical of romantic-farcical comedies, and is complemented by humorous interludes from the supporting characters, such as Ciboletta (Juliette Khalil) and Pappacoda (Jakob Semotan). The ironic approach to contemporary topics is particularly striking; From gluten-free pasta to political references, a bridge is built between the 18th century and today. Nevertheless, some critics found the reference humor overwrought and the meta-gags depicting Carnival as a Halloween party failed.
A stage set of contrasts
The minimalist set design is highlighted by the discordant colorful costumes and is intended to stimulate the audience's imagination, although it is often perceived as dreary. In addition, thematic stage sets are used, which are rich in seafood and vegetables. The humorous component of the production is supported by the comedic timing and facial expressions of the cast, resulting in an entertaining experience.
The original operetta “One Night in Venice” has a long history. It was first performed in Berlin on October 3, 1883 and was the only one by Strauss to be premiered outside Vienna. The premiere in Vienna at the Theater an der Wien followed just a few days later with resounding success. Reviews highlighted the melodies, but criticized the libretto by F. Zell and Richard Genée, which was perceived as banal and based on a story by Eugène Cormon.
More performances and tradition
The performance at the Vienna Volksoper is not the first adaptation of the popular operetta, which has also been seen in many cities around the world and in various languages, including New York and London. The next performances are already scheduled for October 29th and November and December 2025. The combination of traditional elements and modern influences ensures that this operetta continues to resonate with both audiences and critics.
The main roles in the original premiere included characters such as the Duke Guido, the hairdresser Caramello and the fisherman's girl Annina, both of whom are set in the context of the romantic confusions and masquerades during the Venetian Carnival. The production thus reflects the rich heritage and continuous evolution of Johann Strauss II's works, combining past and present in a unique way.
