Berlin reacts to increasing knife violence: Interior Senate plans to revoke driver's licenses for perpetrators as a prevention measure.
Driving license revocation for knife offenders: Berlin's new anti-violence weapon!
Berlin is facing a threatening wave of knife attacks! The numbers speak volumes: In 2023, incidents increased by five percent - a total of 3,482 knife attacks were registered, compared to 3,317 in the previous year. Berlin's Interior Senator, Iris Spranger (SPD, 63), is now pulling the ripcord and conjuring up a new concept from her hat of measures to stop the increasing violence on Berlin's streets.
The so-called “Berlin Strategy” is intended to really take the wind out of the sails of knife perpetrators! Key point: a driving license revocation for those who appear particularly aggressive. Spranger plans to additionally target multiple perpetrators who show a high level of violence by losing their “cardboard”. A striking example: Anyone who commits crimes with a knife six times in two years could lose their driver's license.
“Knife Coordination Office”: Facts on the table!
But so far, paragraphs 69 and 69a of the Road Traffic Act seem to have hardly been used. The reason? Missing data transmission! But a remedy is in sight: a newly founded “Messer Coordination Office” at the Berlin State Criminal Police Office is intended to forward the necessary information to the responsible State Office for Citizens and Regulatory Affairs (LABO). From the beginning of next year, the LABO could act directly as soon as there are several convictions. Eleven known perpetrators could be affected immediately!
More tough measures
But that's not all! The group of experts has decided on further explosive measures to improve the security situation: Individual bans on carrying weapons in public should be imposed for repeat perpetrators. Knife ban zones are also planned around the clock at Görlitzer Park, Kottbusser Tor and Leopoldplatz from January 2025. In addition, special prevention initiatives are being introduced in accommodation for refugees. Berlin is taking action and putting an end to the razor-sharp threat!
